Why We Worship The Way We Do
The Bible explains that worship is an act of love, submission, and honor that is given to God to glorify Him.
Our relationship with God through Jesus Christ gives us this privilege.
Worship involves every part of us, spirit, soul, and body.
David wrote in Psalm 103:1, "Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me bless His holy Name."
Our scriptural worship can be expressed in a variety of ways:
We are able to come before His presence with singing, enter into God's gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. Singing is ministry. It is not simply to provide variety in our worship service.
Psalm 95.1
O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
Psalm 100:2
Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
Psalm 47:6
Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
Joy and gratitude are expressed by clapping the hands with or without music.
Psalm 47:1
O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
Openness, love, and surrender are expressed by lifting our hands in praise to God.
Psalm 63:4
Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
Psalm 134:2
Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord.
Sometimes dancing is appropriate as an expression of joy when it’s done discreetly and reverently unto the Lord.
Psalm 149:3
Let them praise his name in the dance.
Psalm 150:4
Praise him with the timbrel and dance.
The Bible teaches us that there is a place for all kinds of musical instruments for use in praise and worship.
Psalm 150:3-5
Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
2 Chronicles 5:13
It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the Lord...
Speaking in other tongues is the initial evidence of being Baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4; Acts 19:6). This is a devotional gift meant to help us in prayer and in our praise and worship to God.
1 Corinthians 14:39
...and forbid not to speak with tongues.
Acts 10:46
For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.
1 Corinthians 14:15
I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
The Bible teaches that there are different kinds of tongues (1 Corinthians 12:10). When tongues is not being used as a devotional gift to help us pray or praise and worship, it is often used in a public way when inspired by God which will always require a supernatural interpretation. The use of tongues with an interpretation is a message from God to His people and is considered equivalent to prophecy.
1 Corinthians 12:8-10
For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
1 Corinthians 14:5
I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
1 Corinthians 14:27-28
If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Prophecy is a supernatural utterance in a known language. It is the spoken Word of God for a given situation, as inspired by the Spirit, spoken by one individual to another or to the Body as a whole. The purpose is to edify, exhort, and comfort.
1 Corinthians 14:3
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
A "new song" is defined as a spontaneous, free-flowing song, sung under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit through an individual or the entire congregation to glorify God.
Psalm 33:3
Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
Psalm 96:1
O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord, all the earth.
Psalm 98:1
O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.
In the New Testament, this is referred to as a "spiritual song" meaning a "song of the Spirit".
Ephesians 5:19
Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Psalm 46:10
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
Zephaniah 1:7
Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord God: for the day of the Lord is at hand: for the Lord hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests.
Psalm 130:5
I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
Psalm 131:2
Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
Isaiah 40:31
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Habakkuk 2:20
But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.
Other forms of worship include kneeling and bowing,
Psalm 95:6
O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker.
standing before the Lord,
Nehemiah 9:4-5
Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the Lord their God.
Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the Lord your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.
Psalm 135:2
Ye that stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God.
and shouting.
Psalm 27:6
And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord.
Psalm 32:11
Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.
Psalm 35:27
Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the Lord be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.
Psalm 98:4
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.
Psalm 100:1
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
When we invite people to come forward for prayer, often we will lay hands on the individual in a discreet way as we pray. This is a New Testament practice as can be seen in the following Scriptures:
Mark 16:15-18
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Matthew 9:18
While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
Hebrews 6:2
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
Acts 8:14-17
Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
Acts 19:1-6
And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
At times when people are prayed for, they may fall under the power of God. There are a few instances in Scripture where the presence of God was so overpowering the people present could not stand.
2 Chronicles 5:14
So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God.
